Coastal Prairie Seed Collecting

June 14, 2014 @ 8:00 am - 11:00 am

Come collect green milkweed, blackeyed Susans/Rudberkia hirta, and other ripe seeds for your projects, and also for reseeding the site after the stormwater basin is excavated.

Where: The City of Alvin has given permission to collect seed from a 15 acre parcel that will be developed as a stormwater detention basin. The land is at the corner of Kost and South St, on the west side of Kost. See the map link is below.

How: You may find the best place to park is on Coffee street north of the site, or ask to park at Valero across South St.
Bring your bags and pruners. I will have cold water, watermelon, labels and identification books.

Why: Alvin is developing the site for much needed flood control and water quality measures. Much of the site will become part of a shallow flood control basin with stormwater wetlands. Groundbreaking for excavating the Kost Pond basin will be later this year. The topsoil will be banked and spread on the uplands after construction, and the grounds will be reseeded with seeds collected by volunteers.
