SUMMARY:Pedestrian Bridge Grand Opening at our Mason Park wetland site
DESCRIPTION:The Houston Parks Board is putting on a celebration for the long-awaited pedestrian bridge over Brays Bayou at Mason Park. TCWP has been invited to meet with the park goers and lead tours of our stormwater wetland along the path to the bridge. The Mason Park Marsh is an early example of how wetlands can be designed and implemented to treat pollution in stormwater before it runs into the bayou. \nThe Parks Board says\, “Join us to celebrate the grand opening of Mason Park Bridge on Saturday\, September 22! Brought to you by Houston Parks Board\, the Grand Opening event will be full of family-friendly activities including a FREE 5k Fun Run/Walk at 8am\, sports activities\, canoe tours of the wetland\, live music\, and more. SUMMARY:Stormwater wetland spring planting at Exploration Green
DESCRIPTION:Have fun while helping to improve water quality and create habitat! \nThis wetland planting event is one of a series of Saturday plantings to establish a wetland in the newest portion of the lake at Exploration Green Nature Park in Clear Lake City.  The wetland will cleanse stormwater and provide habitat for aquatic animals in the lake (which is in fact a nationally known flood control basin following its performance during Hurricane Harvey!). All are welcome to take part in expanding the wetland we’ve been growing and planting with community going on three years. \nA flyer can be downloaded here: WetlandPlantingFlyer_v1. \nFor more information and to RSVP\, contact Mary Carol Edwards at mcedwards@tamu.edu

SUMMARY:Wetland planting event at Exploration Green
DESCRIPTION:Calling volunteers: Come plant a wetland around the Habitat Island at Exploration Green! The island situated in Exploration Green’s Phase 1 lake will be ready for native trees and wetland species\, creating a refuge for migratory birds and waterbirds. TCWP is a part of the redevelopment of the former golf course into a state of the art stormwater detention park\, and is providing the stormwater wetland. \nPlanting will take place over two Saturdays. The tree planting\, led by Trees for Houston\, will take place on Saturday\, November 18. The wetland planting\, led by TCWP\, is Saturday\, November 25. \nRegistration for the events is at https://explorationgreen.eventbrite.com/ \nIf rain dates are needed\, planting will take place the following Saturdays\, Nov 25 for trees\, and Dec 2 for wetlands. \nAccess to the island itself will be by boat\, and will be limited to 50 people. However\, there will be volunteer activities on shore as well. Children with a parent present are welcome to do work onshore. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet and muddy. Tools will be provided. We will keep going until all the plants are in the ground! For more information\, contact mcedwards@tamu.edu. \nThere is no charge for this community event\, but an RSVP is requested. For questions please contact mcedwards (at) tamu.edu. See you soon at Exploration Green!

SUMMARY:Freshwater wetland invasive plants and animals: a walking tour at Exploration Green
DESCRIPTION:Mary Carol Edwards will lead a one-and-a-half-hour tour that focuses on invasive plants and animals at Exploration Green park in Clear Lake City. The tour will be co-led by Jerry Hamby\, Texas Master Naturalist and lead volunteer at the Exploration Green tree nursery. Jerry writes\, “The primary goal is to show participants how to identify and remove the most common invasive species (along with a few aggressive natives that need to be controlled). Beyond that\, we are looking to establish a plan for dealing with invasive plants. We want to set up regular times for volunteers to walk through the park\, remove targeted invasives\, and log their work. Even if you don’t intend to volunteer in this effort\, we encourage you to attend the tour. You will certainly learn a great deal and see how much progress has been made in “rewilding” the green space. If you have never seen Exploration Green\, the tour will provide a unique perspective of an incredible urban landscape.” \n \nThis event will involve walking one to two miles through the developed sections of Exploration Green. Because the ground is uneven and muddy in places\, it is advisable that you wear appropriate clothing\, including sturdy boots (or mud boots if you have them). Also\, be sure to wear sun protection and carry water; there is currently little shade in the park.\n\nThe tour will take place on Thursday\, August 24th\, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Meet at the Phase 1 site\, near 1800 Reseda\, Houston 77062. Park on the street near the bridge.\n\n\nPlease RSVP to Jerry Hamby at jhamby4@comcast.net if you plan to attend. There is no limit on the number of participants\, but we would like to get a rough head count. Jerry will send reminders as the tour date approaches.

SUMMARY:Wetland Plants for the Home Garden
DESCRIPTION:Even if you don’t have a pond\, bog\, or rain garden\, you may be surprised to learn how many native wetland plants you can grow in regular garden soil. Find out about the amazing adaptability of wetland plants in this region. We’ll also discuss the ethics of wild collecting\, and some important native wetland species you probably DON’T want in your home water garden. \n About the speaker: Mary Carol is a native grown in Houston\, herself. She has spent a lifetime messing with plants\, except for a short period when she was in grad school for a Masters in Architecture at University of Houston.  At Texas Coastal Watershed Program\, she is tasked with changing the way we build flood control basins on the Gulf Coast by demonstrating how adding a wetland improves water quality\, provides habitat\, and adds green space.

SUMMARY:Coastal Prairie Seed Collecting
DESCRIPTION:Come collect green milkweed\, blackeyed Susans/Rudberkia hirta\, and other ripe seeds for your projects\, and also for reseeding the site after the stormwater basin is excavated. \nWhere: The City of Alvin has given permission to collect seed from a 15 acre parcel that will be developed as a stormwater detention basin. The land is at the corner of Kost and South St\, on the west side of Kost. See the map link is below. \nHow: You may find the best place to park is on Coffee street north of the site\, or ask to park at Valero across South St.\nBring your bags and pruners. I will have cold water\, watermelon\, labels and identification books. \nWhy: Alvin is developing the site for much needed flood control and water quality measures. Much of the site will become part of a shallow flood control basin with stormwater wetlands. Groundbreaking for excavating the Kost Pond basin will be later this year. The topsoil will be banked and spread on the uplands after construction\, and the grounds will be reseeded with seeds collected by volunteers. \n

SUMMARY:Restore Collaboration Roundtables- Victoria\, TX (RSVP)
DESCRIPTION:The meeting in Victoria is the first of three roundtables to be held along the coast. Meetings will also be held in Brownsville and Baytown. Each location will offer the same format and an RSVP is required. The roundtables are coordinated by the USFWS\, Texas Sea Grant\, and Texas AgriLife. \nThe Gulf coast stands to benefit from a massive influx of conservation funding\, but the conservation community risks leaving a lot of value on the table without effective partnerships. To widen the community’s thinking of what is possible and to capture as much value as possible\, it is critical that we share our perspectives and experiences (good and bad) on partnerships. Emphasis will be on why collaborations remain meaningful beyond any one project. We believe that these round-tables are the seeds for improving the state of communication\, cooperation\, and collaboration\, and thus opening new conservation frontiers with nontraditional partners.
